Report By: URGC Ambassador H.E. Naser Faghihi
THANKING URGC & URGC AMBASSADOR DR. AMELIA CONSTANTINOU
I would like to announce that under extreme pressures imposed by Liberty's friends in the US and Europe, Iranian regime elements in the camp management team were forced to give in to our demands and after 5 days the delivery of
food and fuel into the camp was reestablished. Of course, they may start harassing and obstructing all over again that I hope won't happen again.
Those five days were very hard to the residents, especially to the elderly and the patients, as the temperature was about 120 degrees and we couldn't turn on ACs which made it very difficult to live and sleep in metal trailers. This is exactly what our enemy wants us to suffer from.
You surely know it was not easy to push them back; in fact it was accomplished through a widespread international campaign by Liberty supporters across the globe. Below is a short list of this campaign: - Serious protests raised by Mrs. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Ed Royce in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on these measures who demanded an end to these inhumane prohibitions; - Senators John McCain and Menendez, and Judge Ted Poe discussed and followed up the issue with the US State Department and Embassy in Baghdad; - On Thursday morning a significant session was held in the British House of
Commons with various MPs and Lords, and a large number of reporters takingpart.
This session was also aired live on the Internet, in which they discussed the blockade imposed on fuel and food deliveries into the camp. Lord Tony Clark and Lord Maginnis called on the Iraqi government to end these criminal measures; - The residents sent several joint letters to the US Ambassador to Iraq Hon.Stuart Jones, a letter to UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Iraq Mr. Ján Kubiš, and a letter by the committee of Liberty physicians to the US Embassy in Baghdad. - Senator Torricelli, as the residents' legal advisor, wrote an urgent letter to Mr. Brett McGurk, US Deputy Secretary of State, calling on him to have the US immediately stop these criminal measures. He replied that the US Embassy in Baghdad had been instructed to carry out the necessary measures;
On Thursday night Dr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former European Parliament Vice President and President of the International Committee 'In Search of Justice', held a press conference via the Internet calling for an end to this blockade.
And finally the protest letters by the NGOs and human rights defenders like URGC / URGC Ambassador Dr. Amelia Constantinou to UNAMI and US embassy in Bagdad did finally work and for that we express our extreme gratitude to URGC / URG Ambassador Dr. Amelia Constantinou for having sincerely accompanied us this campaign and to lift the ban.
Best wishes,
Naser Faghihi
